New flag to improve content quality

The internet works as a vast space for different types of content. For a search engine like Google, they made a better way to give accurate and reliable information by filtering any offensive or upsetting content through search.

The algorithm is created to spot contents that are belligerent or displeasing, as well as those with incorrect information. The goal of the algorithm is to prevent such content from crowding out the search results. Instead, more accurate and trustworthy content and will be shown in the top search results.

According to one of Google’s senior engineer, Paul Haahr, they would like to improve the search quality and show better content for users. He expounded that the term “fake news” is a term they would like to avoid and they target any content with imprecise information that reached the top pages of search results.

An army of ‘quality raters’

This works by using data from human “quality raters” that includes over 10,000 contractors worldwide. They need to evaluate the search results by conducting real searches which are drawn from the search efforts that Google sees.

The “raters” will give their rating the pages that appear in the top results. The content will be checked based on the correctness of information and how good it is. Updated guidelines with a new section on “Upsetting-Offensive” content is now being used. It is nearly 200 pages long that give instruction about how to assess the website quality. It also highlights how to provide reviews that will still meet the needs of those who might need to search for specific queries.

To identify potentially upsetting or offensive content, a new flag that is added for raters to use. At this time, the pages could not be flagged by raters with this designation.

How it works

Quality raters provide data that is used to generally improve the search algorithms of Google. Once it is given enough time, the data could create an impact. This will take effect on low-quality pages and other various pages which have not been reviewed.

The raters do not have any power to directly alter the search results of Google. Webmasters and SEOs must take note that the rankings of the page will not be affected if the rater marks a particular result as low quality.
