Google Search changed in three ways that matter to Philippine businesses between 2025 and late 2026: a steady rhythm of core and spam updates, the end of FAQ rich results (they stopped showing on May 7, 2026), and AI-generated summaries that answer more questions directly on the results page. Google’s own guidance says no special optimisation is needed for its AI features, but the click data suggests you should plan for fewer, better-qualified visits.

This article gives you a dated timeline drawn from Google’s own status dashboard and documentation, explains what each change means in practice, and finishes with a prioritised action list. It complements our existing coverage of the September 2026 spam update and our guide to technical SEO foundations, so we will not repeat those in detail.

The 2025–2026 Google update timeline

Google publishes confirmed ranking updates on its Search Status Dashboard. A core update is a broad change to how Google assesses content quality across all sites. A spam update targets specific manipulative practices such as scaled low-value content, link schemes or site reputation abuse. The dates below are the start dates listed by Google.

Date Update Type
March 13, 2025 March 2025 core update Core
June 30, 2025 June 2025 core update Core
August 26, 2025 August 2025 spam update Spam
December 11, 2025 December 2025 core update Core
March 24, 2026 March 2026 spam update Spam
March 27, 2026 March 2026 core update Core
May 21, 2026 May 2026 core update Core
June 24, 2026 June 2026 spam update Spam
August 18, 2026 August 2026 spam update Spam
September 24, 2026 September 2026 spam update Spam

Two patterns stand out. First, spam updates came roughly every two to three months in 2026, so low-quality tactics are being cleaned up continuously rather than once a year. Second, core updates landed in clusters, which is why many site owners saw rankings move in late March 2026, when a spam update and a core update started three days apart.

How to read a traffic drop after an update

  1. Check the date. Compare your drop in Search Console with the dashboard dates. If there is no match, look at technical causes first: a broken sitemap, an accidental noindex, a slow server or a migration.
  2. Check which pages fell. A drop across thin or duplicated pages points to quality; a drop on one key page may be a competitor improving.
  3. Wait for the rollout to finish. Updates take days to weeks to complete. Avoid big changes mid-rollout.
  4. Improve, do not chase. Google’s advice after core updates has consistently been to focus on content quality rather than quick fixes.

The end of FAQ rich results

FAQ rich results were the expandable question-and-answer dropdowns that used to appear under some search listings. Many Philippine business sites added FAQPage structured data to win extra space on the results page.

The decline happened in two steps. In August 2023, Google announced that FAQ rich results would be limited to well-known, authoritative government and health websites, and that HowTo rich results were being deprecated. Then, according to Google’s FAQPage documentation, FAQ rich results stopped showing on May 7, 2026, and the documentation itself was removed on June 15, 2026.

The lesson is broader than FAQs: search features built on markup can change or disappear. Invest first in content and site quality, and treat rich results as a bonus.

Structured data that is still worth keeping

Structured data as a whole is not dead. Markup that describes facts about your business and offers still helps Google understand your pages, even when it does not produce a special visual result. For a typical Philippine SME, the useful types are:

  • Organization or LocalBusiness: your official name, logo, address, phone number and opening hours, consistent with your Google Business Profile.
  • Product and Offer: name, price in pesos and availability for online shops, kept in sync with what the page actually shows.
  • Article: headline, dates and author for blog posts, so the published and updated dates are clear.
  • BreadcrumbList: your site’s page hierarchy, which helps Google display a clean path instead of a long URL.

The rule is simple: markup must describe what a visitor can see on the page. Hidden or exaggerated markup is a spam signal, not a shortcut.

AI Overviews and AI Mode: what Google says

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown at the top of some results pages, with links to sources. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience. On October 7, 2025, Google said AI Mode was expanding to more than 200 countries and territories; our research could not confirm whether the Philippines is included, so check availability on your own devices rather than assuming.

Google’s developer guidance on AI features and your website (updated December 10, 2025) makes three points worth knowing:

  • There are no special requirements or extra markup to appear in AI features; the normal SEO fundamentals apply.
  • To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
  • Traffic from AI features is included in Search Console’s Performance report under the Web search type, not reported separately.

Be wary of anyone selling a special “AI Overview optimisation” package. Google’s own position is that the same practices that make content helpful for people make it eligible for AI features.

What the click data says

The concern for businesses is not visibility but clicks. In a study published on July 22, 2025, Pew Research Center found that Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. Pew’s data was collected from US adults, so Philippine behaviour may differ, but the direction is clear.

Plan for fewer but better visits: if Google answers the simple question, your page has to win the next, more valuable one.

In ServicioPro’s analysis, the queries most exposed are simple informational ones (“what is”, “how many”, definitions). Queries least exposed are those where people need to act: book, buy, call, get a quote, visit a location. For most SMEs, those action queries are where the revenue is anyway.

What Philippine businesses should do now

The table below is ServicioPro’s prioritised view of where to spend effort in late 2026.

Priority Action Why it matters in 2026
High Complete and maintain your Google Business Profile Local “near me” and map results drive calls and visits that AI summaries do not replace
High Build pages around services, locations and prices you actually offer Action-oriented pages match high-intent searches
High Remove or improve thin, duplicated and auto-generated pages Core and spam updates target low-value content at scale
Medium Fix page speed and responsiveness INP replaced FID as a Core Web Vital on March 12, 2024; slow sites lose users on mobile data
Medium Add original information: your own photos, prices, processes, local knowledge Original detail is what summaries cite and what competitors cannot copy
Low Chase new rich result types FAQ rich results show how quickly markup features can disappear

A monthly SEO routine for a small business

  • Check Search Console for indexing errors and pages that lost clicks.
  • Compare any drops with Google’s Search Status Dashboard dates.
  • Update one important service page with fresh, specific information.
  • Reply to Google reviews and update business hours, especially around holidays.
  • Test your top pages on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data.
  • Record leads by source so you can see whether search still pays, even if raw traffic falls.

Where to put SEO effort in late 2026: local presence, action-oriented pages and content quality come before new markup features.

Measuring success when clicks fall

If AI summaries reduce top-of-funnel clicks, raw sessions become a weaker measure of SEO success. Track instead: enquiries and quote requests from organic search, calls and direction requests from your Business Profile, conversions per landing page, and branded searches over time. A site that gets fewer visits but more bookings is doing better, not worse. Set up conversion tracking before your next redesign so you have a baseline.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove FAQPage schema from my website?

There is no urgency. FAQ rich results no longer show and Google removed the documentation, so the markup provides no special benefit. You can remove it during your next site update and keep the visible FAQ content if it helps readers.

Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google states there are no additional requirements. Pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and normal SEO best practices apply.

How do I see traffic from AI Overviews in Search Console?

Google says clicks and impressions from AI features are included in the Performance report under the Web search type. They are not currently broken out separately.

My traffic dropped in March 2026. Was it the core update?

Possibly. Google started a spam update on March 24 and a core update on March 27, 2026. Compare the exact dates in Search Console, check which pages dropped, and rule out technical problems before rewriting content.

Is SEO still worth it for a small Philippine business?

Yes, especially for local and action-based searches such as bookings, quotes and directions. The focus has shifted from chasing traffic to capturing high-intent visitors and measuring leads.
